MOLLY SLUPIK ART AND DESIGN

MEET THE ARTIST

Hey, hey! I'm Molly.

I am an intermedia artist based in Northern Colorado. Currently, I'm pursuing my Bachelors of Fine Arts at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, and I've been practicing art from the young age of four years old.

My practice is focused primarily in graphic design, and photography, and I also dabble in painting, sculpture, videography and intermedia installations. Through my art, I try to bring attention to the overshadowed aspects of our world, highlighting moments and details that are often missed.

Outside of art (or I guess in parallel to my practice), I'm always looking to get outdoors: hiking, rowing, flower-farming, or even just sitting on the porch watching a thunderstorm.

THE INSPIRATION

As I sit down to write this segment, there are a couple of random moments and memories that come to mind. While not sequential in any way, these snippets have shaped who I am and how I see the world.

Riding in the tractor bucket up and down the sad little hill in our backyard with my cousins and friends at every bonfire night.

Laying in the grass on said hill looking for ladybugs.

My first "official" job, working for my mom on the flower farm.

Our 23 family National Park adventures. I'm so grateful to my parents for taking us on these trips and showing us some of the coolest places in America (however - I'm not so grateful that they neglected to complete an outfit inspection before we left the lodges. Seriously. Someone should have told 12 year old me that pink does not go with red and turquoise. And the headbands?? Come on.)

Switzerland. Just... all of it. The unreal landscapes, the cozy mountain towns, the wildflowers, the adventure with my family.

Covid. Isolation. Times changing too fast to keep up. Online school. Writing letters to my friends and then going on drives to deliver them. An unprecedented world in one of the biggest transition periods of my life.

The loneliness of high school.

Finding myself in college.

Watching the most amazing sunset on the dock with the rowing team. They laughed at me for getting so excited about some pink clouds, but I'm not sure they saw the same details I did: the reflections on the ripples in the water, the pink glow the sun cast on everyone's faces...

This one solo-hike in Rocky Mountain National Park... I almost didn't go because it was so cold and gloomy, but it was the most peaceful experience and it allowed me to slow down and appreciate all the smallest details.

In all seriousness though, my inspiration comes from the world around me. The large, pressing global issues all the way down to the way water droplets sit on the petal of a flower. I want to capture emotions through the colors I use and the subjects I create. I want to highlight texture in my graphic design and intermedia installations. In my photography and videography, I want to slow down time and bring attention to the details we'd otherwise miss in our fast-paced world.
